What is MCA stacking, and what does an anti-stacking clause do?
Owners and brokers: see what stacking does to cash.
How do one, two and three open advances compare?
Each added advance adds a pull and narrows the cushion. The table shows how the picture changes.
| Open advances | Pulls on the account | What funders check first | Contract point to read |
|---|---|---|---|
| One | One | Deposits and balance after the pull | Terms on more financing |
| Two | Two | Balance on days both pulls land | Both contracts, above all the first |
| Three or more | Three or more | The weakest week with every pull added | Every contract; many limit new advances |
| Consolidated | One replaces several | Whether one new pull is easier to carry | Payoff letters and the new term |
Add every pull, then compare the total with a slow week of deposits. The holdback guide explains how pulls are set.
What does an anti-stacking clause say?
An anti-stacking clause limits more financing while an advance is open. Wording varies from contract to contract.
Clauses that ban new advances outright
Some contracts forbid any new sale of receivables until the advance is paid. Signing another can count as a default.
Clauses that ask for notice or consent
Other contracts allow more financing if the funder is told first, or agrees in writing. Missing that step can still cause trouble.
Contracts that say nothing
A few contracts are silent. Funders may still ask about other advances, and a new lien filing can show them.
Wording that is hard to read
If the clause is unclear, a lawyer should read it before anything new is signed.
Why funders care about order
A later funder collects while earlier pulls are still running. That is why later positions are priced higher. Rules on these offers differ by state; Utah's regulator keeps a public page on its commercial financing act, linked under Sources.
When does MCA stacking become a problem?
Stacking becomes a problem when the combined pulls eat into money needed for payroll, rent or stock.
Warning signs include days below zero, returned payments, and new advances used to make old payments. At that point a consolidation quote is worth comparing.
FAQ
Does stacking make each new advance cost more?
Usually. Each later funder collects behind the others and prices for that risk. Compare total payback across all open advances, not one offer alone.
Does MCA stacking affect my credit score?
Ask each funder how any credit review works before you sign. A missed pull can lead to collection steps.
How long should I wait between advances?
There is no fixed wait. Funders look at how the account handles the pulls already there. A current statement shows that most clearly.
Can I get another advance if I already have two?
Some funders buy third positions, but many pass. A consolidation that replaces the open pulls is often the more likely offer. Read both contracts first.
Is breaking an anti-stacking clause a default?
It can be, depending on the wording. Some contracts treat a new advance as a default event. Read the clause, and ask a lawyer if it is unclear.
Next step
Owners with open advances can apply once and list each one. Brokers can send the full stack through the partner program.

Cost, credit, speed and stacking
- Cost
- Every added position raises the share of each deposit that goes out in debits. Total all open paybacks before you look at one more.
- Credit
- A stacked file raises more questions about the owner, not fewer. Ask any new funder to explain exactly what it looks at.
- Speed
- A file with several open advances needs a careful read, and we promise no date. Payoff letters for each one help a funder move.
- Stacking
- List every open advance with its daily or weekly debit. The desk can then say whether another position, a consolidation or waiting fits.
